A little preparation makes the first weeks with a new puppy or kitten a whole lot calmer for everyone. I see it time and again — those who get their homes set up early and have a plan in place have a much easier and more enjoyable time raising and training their new family member.
Here are two free printable checklists to pop on your fridge and tick off as you go.
This is a huge transition and period of adjustment for your new pet. Create a calm atmosphere to help them settle in happily — watch out for loud noises, make sure children are calm and gentle, avoid anything that might give your pet a fright, and don’t expect too much too soon. Focus on helping your pet feel safe, establishing a predictable routine, and bonding with your new family member.
Agree on the rules as a family, and stay consistent. Heavily reward the behaviours you want to see more of, and avoid reinforcing the ones you don’t. For example - don’t feed your kitten on the kitchen bench, don’t give your puppy attention when they bark or whine, and only engage with your puppy when all four paws are on the floor.
Puppies and kittens are vulnerable and prone to finding mischief, so have pet insurance sorted as soon as your new pet comes home (treatment for common mishaps can get expensive). Southern Cross Pet Insurance’s FreeCover gives six weeks of free cover for puppies and kittens aged 6–26 weeks, so you have peace of mind while your new companion settles in.
If you sign up before 31 October 2026, you also get a chance to win 1 of 10 $250 Animates gift cards — what better excuse to stock up on the essentials, or spoil your new pet with all the toys and treats your heart can stand! Learn more about 6 weeks FreeCover here.
